The maintenance aims at maintaining an installation in the best possible state of functioning.
There are essentially four types of maintenance:
- The curative maintenance: we wait to perceive a problem to intervene: that breaks. We repair.
- The predictive maintenance: by means of elaborate ways of measure, we analyze the values of significant parameters of the functioning of a mechanical, electric, hydraulic installation, or other and we estimate the deadline to affect a threshold of intervention in technical safety zone. She allows to perceive, well before that shows itself the slightest perceptible sign physiologically, an anomaly or a drift of preliminary value in the degradation of a mobile part.
- The systematic maintenance: the predictive maintenance which can not apply to all the organs or being too expensive, she must be doubled by a systematic maintenance. - Systematic maintenance of turbines.

This one requires a definition of the periodicities of every operation, according to data builder (sometimes debatable), the analysis of the previous behavior of the installation and » the rules of the art » which are promulgated by a large-scale observation of the behavior of a type of installation.
The maintenance » évolutionnelle « : by legal, statutory or administrative obligation in particular during the renewal of the title of exploitation.
